Our Evening Shelter and Meal Group Volunteer positions are currently on pause due to COVID-19. Please contact Noah (Community Engagement Coordinator) with any questions about those roles.

In the meantime, we invite you to visit House of Charity's volunteer portal for additional volunteer opportunities within our merged organization: https://ststephensmpls.volunteerhub.com/lp/HouseofCharity/.

Volunteers founded our organization and remain an integral part of St. Stephen's. We adapt our volunteer roles to meet the changing needs of our programs and program participants.

Our regular volunteer roles include the following:

Donation Drive Host

Organize and host a donation drive with your colleagues, family, friends, classmates, or faith group to help put together ‘Welcome Home Baskets’ for our community members moving out of shelter and into their new homes! All you have to do is pick a theme (i.e. kitchen supplies, bedding basics, hygiene and bathroom items, cleaning items, or school-readiness supplies) and pack a box or laundry basket with the corresponding items that will be gifted to families and individuals in our programs. Visit ststephensmpls.org/donate for a complete list on ongoing donation needs.

Evening Shelter Volunteer

Work alongside staff and volunteers to provide hospitality to shelter guests and assist with shelter operations. Tasks may include serving and cleaning up dinner, distributing mail, welcoming guests to the shelter, playing games or doing puzzles with guests, answering phones, washing laundry, and documenting which guests want next-day lunches or wakeup calls. New volunteers are matched with an experienced trainer.

Shelter Meal Group Coordinator

Plan, purchase, prepare, and serve a meal for 50-55 people at our Clinton Avenue Shelter or First Covenant Church Shelter. Meal Groups are encouraged to eat alongside guests, contribute to a hospitable environment, and help with meal clean-up.

Unsheltered Count

Volunteers work alongside St. Stephen's staff to administer short surveys to individuals sleeping unsheltered in Hennepin County. Surveys are completed at local shelters, meal drop-in centers, and service centers across the city. These surveys help us better understand the needs of individuals experiencing homelessness so that we can provide the best service possible.
